Salvarea balenelor

planta oleaginoasa importanta pentru salvarea balenelor de la disparitie este jojoba, este un arbust care creste în regiunile desertice din Arizona si California, SUA si Mexic. Calitatile sale erau cunoscute cu generatii în urma de amerindieni. Uleiul de jojoba din boabe este chimic aproape identic cu uleiul continut de sperma balenei aflate pe cale de disparitie. Începând cu anii 1970 jojoba a început sa fie cultivata pentru comercializare în multe regiuni aride, pentru a înlocui uleiul spermatic. Este folosit în industria cosmetica ca agent de hidratare, dar poate fi utilizat si ca lubrifiant, ca substitut al multor derivate petroliere si ca hrana pentru animale.
